Am I the only one with a slight addiction to buying more books before I’ve finished the last one? (Not shown: Ghettoside on audiobook from the library.)
My free advice: try to read the child development/how to books before your kid actually reaches the stage you're reading about now. You will have little time for study when you're in the stage. Good luck! It's always great to see new parents starting down the road ...
This is sound advice. I am a little late on the potty training book (my son is 2.5). Reading advice books in the heat of the moment doesn’t give you enough time to digest and independently decide what you do and don’t agree with. This book left me feeling like a failure when it’s approach didn’t work in 3 days, which is just silly on my part, but stress will do that to you!!
FWIW my experience is that "potty training" is something the parents can do while they wait for their kids to be ready. For my first son, for a year we "potty trained:" we put him in pull-ups and underwear, read the books, bribed with stickers /m&m's. Yeah, and threw out clothes and shoes after major accidents. And then one day (around 3? 4?), he was ready, could tell us when he needed to go. I don't think the "training" had much to do with it. With the second one, I didn't bother "training." Around 2 or 2.5, we put him in pull-ups, and when he started telling us he had to use the bathroom, he trained.
Soon to be on my nightstand: Christina Groeger’s “The Education Trap”.

I’m such a genius that my brilliant advice was followed by a screamfest between my son and me. I think it was about being on time...
